New Blog Name!

My blog name is NX-Files. Basically it's a play on my username (NX) and the TV series The X-Files (which coincidentally is one of my favourite shows).

As before, I'll be simul-blogging on Windows Live Spaces & Blogger, but this time with the same blog name.

I decided that the blog names 'Brashtalk' and 'NinthFloor' were a little too obsecure and I wanted to include my username in the URL.

It's very painful chosing a blog name. This will be the last time I'm going to change my blog URL, ever ;) . NX-Files is a fairly generic and inoffensive blogname, so it's perfect.

Even though I've settled on a blog name, I haven't settled on a platform. There are things I like about in both Windows Live Spaces and Blogger. However, in terms of user friendly-ness and customisation - Blogger is streets ahead. WL Spaces can't seem to handle even basic HTML. However I do like the uniqueness factor that comes with WL Spaces because everyone seems to have a blogger account.

Check 'em out. I'd appreciate any feed back on design and layout of the two platforms.

...... according to both Helen & Peter's websites. Helen suppose to be acting Foreign Affair's minister, a subject she 'loves', yet it's not listed as one of her responsibilities.

The Labour website should be kept up-to-date because they're the governing party (for now) and the site is paid for by the taxpayer.

The Owen Glenn, Winston Peter, and Mike Williams saga is just one piece of a puzzle for which the picture has been quite clear for sometime now; Helen Clark owes her third term to acts of corruption.

You don't have to be partial to conspiracy theories to realise this. Lets see.....

- Labour stole $820,000 from the tax payer to fund a key component of their '05 election campaign.

- Labour broke the electoral spending cap - an act defined as a corrupt practice in the law.

- The Maori Party was offered $250,000 to side with Labour post '05 election.

- Labour's biggest donor gave $100,000 to Winston Peters early after the 2005 election to pay for his legal battles with National's Bob Clarkson and possibly even Rodney Hide.

- Labour and Winston Peters obtained copies of 100s of Don Brash's and National's email correspondence and released some of them at critical times during the '05 election campaign. How they got them they won't say.

- Owen Glenn gave Labour a $100,000 interest free loan to help pay for Labour's '05 election overspend, a loan which Mike William initially denied.

- Labour arranged buses to take Mangere voters to the polls. This in itself isn't corrupt (though taking advantage of the politically naive Pacific Islanders is hardly ethical), Labour's '05 Mangere candidate Philip Field is up for charges of corruption. There has also been recent speculation that Labour bribed Mangere people KFC for votes!

- Well before the '05 election Helen Clark and Phil Goff broke an important convention and released MFAT notes take during a meeting between National and American senators. They then used the 'gone by lunchtime' quote as an attack theme during the '05 election.

- Post '05 election Labour passed a law to make their illegal overspending legal.

- Post '05 election Labour passed the radial Electoral Finance Act without even consulting opposition parties; a break in parliamentary convention of the worst kind.

- Post '05 election Labour has stacked the public service with their cronies; another serious break in parliamentary convention.

The above points are all fact and have been reported in the media. They either show an abuse of power or outright corruption on Labour's part. New Zealand is a small democracy with only one house of parliament and no constitution. Conventions are what hold the place together, so to deliberately break them is very serious.

The facts are pretty damming, but I reckon there's more going on behind the scenes but can not be proven (yet). For example.

- Helen Clark won't fire Winston Peters because she not only knew about Glenn's donation to Winston Peters, but approved it. In fact the donation may have been a condition of Winston's coalition deal with Helen.

It all adds up to the 2005 election being stolen from National and Don Brash. And this is why I can't stand Helen Clark and why she has to lose the election on November 08/08.

Misdirection: Environmental issues

As I stood next to one huge forest fire, I thought of all the times I have been urged to unplug my phone charger, turn my TV off standby or turn the thermostat down by a couple of degrees.

Yet I cannot remember ever being told that the fires burning down the rainforest are responsible for 20% of worldwide carbon emissions, the same amount as all the transport in the world combined.

The leftist blog 'The Standard' bangs on about political misdirection so much that I decided to steal the term to highlight the substantial issue of environmental misdirection.

With attention focused on carbon emissions, other environmental issues like deforestation of the rain forest and reduced species biodiversity are left by the wayside.

While celebrities lecture us about reducing our carbon footprint to achieve a non-specific goal, species are becoming extinct and forests are being destroyed.

It's very easy to measure success with saving a species e.g. increase the kiwi population by 10,000 birds. But you can never fail if you're advocating climate change because how do you know if you succeed?

Climate change, rain forest, misdirection, biodiversity.

Should John Key have delivered his messaged to beneficiaries?

Fran O'Sullivan: Key could send powerful message to DPB women

It's a pity National leader John Key did not reach out directly to domestic purposes beneficiaries to persuade them why it was in their best interests to seek work once their youngest reaches six.

Fran does have a point. John Key would've received a lot of mana if he delivered his message to an audience full of beneficiaries. He also would've also received more media coverage.

Sure there would've been the odd heckle and Key would've had to moderate his language, but the pay-off in the eyes of the voters could be worth it.

However, given his message was well received by the voters - it may have not been worth the risk.

Winston Peter's and the privileges committee

Fighting talk from Winston Peters before privileges hearing

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says he is happy for the public to hear what he has to say to the privileges committee next Monday and wishes the hearing was earlier in the day so more people could attend.

Yes of course is he.

Mr "5.6%" Peters is both irrelevant and important at the same time - which is exactly why MMP is flawed.

Then again, any Labour minister brought in front of the privileges committee would get similar amounts of attention. The difference being the attention would be unwanted in the Labour minister's case.

All Winston needs is 5% of the vote, so any publicity is good publicity.

Sure what Winston has done is hypocritical and reflects badly on himself, but the irony is that the heavy news coverage may actually help him.

In my opinion - Winston doomed himself and his party as soon as he signed up with Labour which is the main reason why they're low in the opinion polls. NZ 1st voters are naturally conservative. So all the scandals surrounding Winston only cements his supporters because 95% of New Zealanders wouldn't vote for him anyway.

I haven't blogged specially on Peters up till now because frankly he's just a sideshow.... a has been. He had promise in 1996 & 2002, but he continually disappoints. Many National voters who defected to him in 2002 did so on the proviso he would be a formidable voice in opposition to Labour - because at the time National sure wasn't. But instead he spent the entire time attacking National and even more so when Dr Brash became leader. His attacks haven't really subsided since John Key became leader.

Winston has past up one opportunity after another.

Touchstone Quiz

After reading that the left-wing activities who infiltrated the Nats conference and quizzed MPs on left-touchstone issues, I decided to quiz myself on the issues.

I'm defining a touchstone issue as something that divides opinion. Other bloggers are welcome to take the quiz and post results on their blogs. The best way to determine your political allegiances is when you consider the issues rather than party personalities. So am I right or left - libertarian or authoritarian?

1. Civil unions: for or against?

For. If people want their relationship to be reconginised in the eyes of the law... why not. Though from a libertarian perspective I personally don't see why the state needs to validate relationships.

2. Prostitution Reform Act reform: for or against?

Leaning toward against. I hate to think this has become a genuine career choice for young woman....

3. Legalised Cannabis for or against?

Leaning toward for. Ultimately I'm for freedom of choice. But scientific evidence shows cannabis can cause genetic damage. Then again.. I drink diet coke.

4. Nuclear weapons: for or against?

For unfortunately. A necessary evil. In any other time an army numbering in the millions (China and Iran) would be out conquering countries. The only thing keeping them at bay are nuclear weapons.

5. US naval ship visits: for or against?

For - for the reason above.

6. Republic or Monarchy.

Monarchy. Because I consider British traditions part of our culture too!

7. Anti-smacking: for or against?

Leaning toward for.

8. Global warming: Skeptic or believer.?

Leaning toward skeptic. I can accept the world is warming, but the political measures to combat GW are rubbish. The elephant in the room GW activists ignore is population growth. One person = how many energy efficient bulbs...? I support reducing carbon for clean air benefits. However the ETS is rubbish.

9. Nuclear power for New Zealand: for or against?

For. Should be at least on the table - especially if the hydrogen economy comes about and to reduce carbon emissions. A royal commission of enquirer would determine if it's right for NZ

10. Genetic engineering: for or against?

For. How else are we going to feed the worlds ever going population?

11. Kiwibank: Sell or keep?

Leaning toward sell. Don't Kiwibank and Westpac et al. borrow money from the same off shore location? So interest paid on Kiwibank mortgages goes to the same off shore lender. The main argument for keeping it in my eyes is they have branches in rural locations.

12. Broadband or trains?

Broadband. Trains are so last century.

13. Electoral finance act: for or against?

Against - let the Exclusive Brethren and the unions campaign - the electorate is smart enough to sort out crap from crap.

14. State funding: for or against?

Against. But could be convinced otherwise.

15. MMP: for or against?

Against. Another proportional system please - perhaps like what the Aussies have.

16. Obama or McCain?

Obama - because I'm sick of anti-Americanism. Though I wish he was pro-free trade.

17. Minimum wage increases: for or against?

For - as long as the increases are pegged to some sort of wage growth index. Currently the minimum wage equals $26000 a year before tax (based on a 40 week). That's enough to get by, but is pretty rubbish really. But to be honest I haven't considered the economic implications.

English hits back at talk of Key coup

EMBATTLED NATIONAL deputy leader Bill English says he will "never" challenge John Key for the party leadership.

English, who was National leader from 2001 to 2003, said he no longer wanted the post "because John Key is doing an excellent job and, having worked with a number of leaders and been one, I'm probably in a better position than most to judge that".

Sometimes you just need to be reassured. There's nothing more damaging than a perception of fractured leadership team.

Helen's Olympic no-show = early election?

It's curious why Helen Clark didn't attend the Olympic games opening ceremony. I saw Kevin Rudd, Sarkozy, Bush and a number of other country leaders on the big screen. There is an immense amount of pride when you see your Olympic team enter the stadium and it's surprising Helen Clark didn't take the opportunity to be associated with that.

One possible reason is that she's planning for an early election.

Fran O'Sullivan: Loose words sparking talk of hidden agenda

It is Key's loose-lipped talk, coupled with the rather too frank comments that English sometimes makes about him, that would have persuaded his opponents that the deputy would be a rich candidate for entrapment. Who can forget his priceless "I'm a stayer, he's a sprinter. I grind away, John just bounces from one cloud to another"?

I blogged this week that English's 'loose' comments about John Key were more a reflection of his style rather any split between the two. Fran's column above throws doubt on my theory. She speculates there is an 'ideological rift' between Key and English and that English will eventually roll Key for the prime ministership.

Having leadership ambitions and differences in opinion are fine - even healthy - just as long as English doesn't under mind his leader. So in light of Fran's column I've a couple of concerns about Bill English:

- English rates himself too highly evident by his comment that Brash and Key don't fully understand WfF

- Even though English said he'd never be leader again when he first became deputy, he still harbours leadership ambitions

- Combining the two above equals an un-contented deputy leader

I wonder whether Key made the right choice when he made English his deputy/finance minister. So given my concerns I reckon Don Brash would've been the better choice for deputy/finance minister and keep Bill English as education spokesperson where he was doing an excellent job. Brash would've been ideal for the job because after his failed bid for PM and his age - he'd have no desire to be leader again.

However he will do so against the background in which for the first time since he faced Tony Blair, a genuine rival has emerged.

Gordon Brown spent the good part of decade hounding Tony Blair for the Premiership and destabilizing his government as a consequence. So now the boot is finally on somebody else's foot - the Blairite David Miliband.

'Poetic justice' some may say.

Brown is now so obviously the underdog that I'm starting to think better of him. Funny how that is.

Mr. Key said Miss Clark could "go for it" but National would be running a positive campaign.

"If she's going to do everything from rort the electoral law, to get (journalist and author) Nicky Hager to listen into our emails, to go out there and get young Labour affiliates to be bugging our personal conversations, well that's her style of politics."

Here Here! To recap Labour dirty deeds (in chronological order IIRC);

- the release confidential MFAT meeting notes

- rort of the electoral law (defined as a corrupt practice in the law)

- exploiting hundreds of National's stolen emails

There are likely to be many more instances such as the fact John Key's rubbish has been searched on multiple occasions. Now much of the above can't be inextricability linked to Labour but it's all rather covenant

There are a couple of possibilities for all of this;

- Labour activists are even more psychotic and 'on to to it' than anyone thought and don't need guidance from their idols on the 9th floor - who are oblivious to what is going on.

- Labour are only casually aware.....

- Labour orchestrates and drives the whole operation from the 9th floor.

I suspect it's a mixture of the latter two. Some of the authors for the attack blogs work for Labour in the beehive!

You can learn much about a person by how they treat their enemies. I can't even remotely consider voting for Labour until they ditch these dirty practices or at least condemn them for what they are.

A change in style is exactly why I'm voting for John Key - regardless of how many dead rats/fishs he swallows.

'The Standard' gone by lunchtime.....

The Standard - Clown princes

In 2005, National gifted Labour the 'gone by lunchtime' comment.

It's rather pointless correcting information on 'The Standard' - there are none so blind as those who will not see (plus the authors work for Helen). Anyway, the quote above is wrong.

Helen and Phil Goff broke a very important convention by using the notes taken by a junior MFAT (ministry of foreign affairs and trade) official during the meeting between Dr Brash, Lockwood Smith and visiting US senators. Even if Lockwood or Brash said the comment, the context is unknown - it may have been a joke or on another topic all together. That is why you don't release what is meant to be confidential meeting notes (Goff only release a partial account).

As a consequence political parties no longer trust MFAT officials - another Labour legacy - which is a real shame.

Labour's willingness to use confidential notes, stolen emails, and secret recordings point to how dubious and dirty that party is under H1 and H2 - which is my 'hot button' issue for why I'm not voting Labour.

Paul Holmes on Bill English

Paul Holmes on English

The secret recordings of Bill English and Dr Lockwood Smith reveal nothing new but perhaps the realities of being in opposition. However, as Paul Holmes said, Mr English's comments show a lack of respect toward John Key. This is concerning but you've got to put it into context with English's style. His tone can often be interpreted as disparaging but is unlikely to reflect what he really thinks.

The evidence for this is the fact he is held in high regard within the National caucus. What this highlights is that English isn't a very good communicator - which is a major reason why he didn't do too well in the 2002 election.

This does not change the fact he's a highly competent MP and finance spokesperson. He has an excellent grasp of the detail. He made an excellent education spokesperson under Dr Brash.

One positive from all of this is that John Key is really shining at crisis management - getting on top of the situation really quickly with his message sorted.

On a general note - it's pretty sad someone snuck in a microphone and recorded private chats. A similar thing happened at Labour's conference during a more 'public' Q & A' with Mike Williams. Wonder if Labour's fingerprints are on this...?

Editoral: Debt now key election issue

Debt now key election issue

^ fair enough. The main argument against borrowing is the cost of the interest, while the argument for borrowing is the potential for the new asset to generate income. For example; A business may go into debt to pay for an extension to their shop with the idea the extra floor space will generate more profits which will ultimately benefit the business.

Each argument is just as valid so there is no right or wrong. National is for borrowing while Labour claims to be against borrowing.

If Labour want to make this an election issue, they're going to have to be far more convincing. To make their case they should declare an aim to reduce debt to 15% of GDP, necessitating the need to keep taxes high. Their key messages would be the savings resulting from the reduction in interest payments and the fact more money stays in NZ.

As Labour stands at the moment with a plan to cut taxes by $10.5 billion and keep debt at around 20% of GDP - they don't have the platform to mount such a campaign without being called hypocrites.

THE 1000 Australian soldiers, sailors and air force personnel in and around Iraq will be there "for a long time to come", Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon has warned.... That completes a comprehensive adjustment of the ALP's policy on Iraq and a significant shift from the impression created by Labor in opposition that Australia's role in Iraq was all but over.

Obama is currently campaigning to withdraw troop from Iraq. All bets are off on this one.

Senior counsel replaces queen's counsel under law change

The title Senior Counsel replaces Queen's Counsel under a law that came into force today and Attorney-General Michael Cullen has convened a selection panel for the first appointments.

Labour's continual harping on about National's a secret agenda is really just a cover for their own secret agendas; one of them being republicanism by stealth.

Labour has made a number of subtle changes over the years, removing crowns from logos, ditching the Privy Council, Knighthoods, and the word 'royal' where ever possible. Now it appears Labour are ditching Queens Counsel, the designation for top lawyers, for Senior Counsel.

These terms and traditions are just as much part of our culture as they are part of British culture. So when Labour changes these traditions to meaningless, bland, PC alternatives without consultation, they are taking away part of who we are. Even if NZ became a republic there would be in harm in keeping the historic terminology.

The surreptitious way this Labour government operates, practically those on the 9^th floor, is a major reason why they're getting the boot come 2008!

My take on the Republican movement

Republican movement nominates potential Kiwi presidents

TheRepublican Movement has announced its top 10 nominees for the first President of New Zealand.

It's hard to articulate why I favour our current status quo i.e. Queen as head of state. My opinion is evolving over time.

The advantages of kinship and friendship have been debunked. Just ask anyone who have tired to get a UK visa.

Economically there doesn't appear to be any advantage for being a sovereign nation. Great Britain's trade agreement with the European Economic Community put an end to that.

Traditionally the UK is the first port of call for any New Zealanders heading overseas, but since the EU enlargement many of the jobs we use to get have been taken by the Polish.

So what reasons does that leave for why NZ should stay a sovereign nation?

1. Everyone knows the Queen and the British royals. This gives a small country like NZ prominence of the world stage when they visit.

2. Uniqueness. Republics are a dime a dozen. Only 16 nations can claim to be a realm of the commonwealth; it adds to our character.

3. Politics. Having a head of state above political influence is refreshing. Even though the Government General is appointed by the government (with the Queen's approval). Governments come and go, having a fixed family as head of state is like a constitutional anchor.

4. History.

5. The New Zealand's fascination with the royals; better inside than out.

The reasons above are not as good as the used to be i.e. economic and immigration wise. But they are good enough to justify remaining a sovereign nation. I don't accept David Farrar's reasoning that we should become a republic in order to enhance our constitution (due to Labour's disregard for convention) because we can do this anyway through entrenching certain laws.

Michael Cullen on John Key adopting Working for Families

"What I liken this to is imagine Santa Clause sitting down and hacking into your kids bank account, transferring money out of your kids bank accounts in to his, then buying you a present with them. And you suppose to fill grateful for that".

The statement above was typed out word for word from Dr Cullen's piece on One News. It a breathtaking display of hypocrisy given that Interest Free Student loans, Working for Families, and 20 hours free child care are essentially taken out of your bank account and given back to you in Labour gift wrapping. These policies that Cullen has introduced are going to be very hard for any government to drop and will only increase in cost as time goes on. They were introduced to win votes in the short term.

Tax cuts on the other hand stimulate the economy by offering a reward for the hour's you've worked.

On the surface John Key's decision to adopt the full WfF is disappointing. However, as David Farrar pointed out, to develop an alternative policy without the aid of government departments is difficult. WfF would've been developed over a period of years by experts in the public service at a considerable cost to the taxpayer. So with that in mind it makes sense to keep the policy until you have the government departments at your disposal to develop something better (and least intrusive).

Three news Journalism or lack of it

Orewa'sRotary Club has once again proved to be a controversial venue for National's leader to hold a speech.

Known for Don Brash's race relations rant four years ago, tonight it was John Key's turn. However this time it was not for any policy announcement, but rather the fact that he apparently did not want the media there to cover it.

TV three's political coverage is often schizophrenic but this story was particularly annoying.

1. What was the point of the story?

2. Where do they get off calling Don Brash's race relations speech a 'rant' - an emotive word which conveys an opinion. They should just stick to the news and let the viewer form an opinion.

Siding with Winston Peter's is like making a pack with the devil, but he does have a point about political journalism in this country. And TV one isn't any better - remember their shocking story that someone in the National Party wasn't a fully signed up climate change believer.

The picture below is of BMW's new 7-series. It goes on sale in the UK on 15 November 2008 - which coincidentally (or ironically) is one of the proposed election dates.

Looks a nice car too - leaner than the current 7-series. Though, on first impression, I don't like the tail lights and the oversized kidney grill.

Hard hats ready as Labour braces for tough game

While John Key shared quality time with his family in Omaha and Bill English mixed pleasure with business in Samoa, there was no time for holidays in Labour-land.

To rub in the point, Helen Clark said of her National rivals: "They do tend to work pretty short weeks and years in my experience. I've found this job is pretty all-consuming."

In her attempt to have a dig at John Key and Bill "clever man" English over the hours they work, I think she casts herself in a negative light. I would like the PM of New Zealand to maintain a work/life balance, just like anyone else. If the PM has no time for herself, then to me that shows she's not working efficiently, or delegating appropriately, or is creating work for herself (she has to 'look after' the country).

Don Brash was also renowned for his workaholic nature. The difference with him is that he wasn't one to gloat about it, or more tellingly, use it for a personal attack.

Fran O'Sullivan: Downer's a voice worth hearing

At the 60th anniversary dinner, Israeli ambassador Yuval Rotem delivered a strong message that Israel wants New Zealand to stand up for human rights around the world.

The subtext (delivered more directly in a subsequent official foreign affairs consultation in Wellington) was that New Zealand should take a more condemnatory approach to Iran, not just beat-up on Israel.

I reckon Helen's much touted foreign affairs expertise is nothing more than a farce. On the big issues such as Israel, a nuclear armed Iran, Iraqi situation, and Mugabe - Helen Clark is either silent or a vocal critic at best. She offers no solutions, and she's not prepared to go out on a limit - just repeat her stock UN line.

The scheme celebrated its first birthday on Tuesday with 718,000 members - more than double the number predicted in the first year. The only people complaining about it are those annoying economists who see the difference between individual gains and the national welfare.

They fear the scheme will not add to total personal savings, merely displace previous savings schemes.

In the Herald last weekend Maria Slade reported an estimate that as little as 9 per cent of the money in KiwiSaver accounts so far is new saving, a percentage the researcher reckoned would not cover the administration and compliance costs of the scheme.

Westpac economist Dominick Stephens said KiwiSaver had cost the taxpayers $497 million in its first 11 months, an amount that could have added to national savings if it had been left in the Budget's fund for future public pensions.

Even that fund is questioned by some savings professionals who point out that a superannuation scheme is only as good as the future economy that will have to pay out. From that point of view, the best retirement insurance is the investment made in the economy today.

Anyone who believes that the best investments are made by those who stand to lose if they get it wrong would argue the economy would be stronger in the long run if the KiwiSaver incentives were turned into personal tax cuts.

I generally try to avoid cut and pasting so much from an article, but John Roughan's points are irrefutable!

I'm a signed-up member of KiwiSaver just because the incentives are too good to pass up. Now some people like KiwiSaver because it locks away their savings so they can't touch it.

So why don't they give people the choice... Kiwisaver for those who want their savings locked away & a tax refund for those who want to put the money into their own savings account. I'd take the latter option.

Had Labour given an inkling at the last election of the premium they have had to pay to re-nationalise the railway, and the fortune it is going to cost to cover its likely losses, National's last campaign would have feasted on the information.

But now that the deed is done, the politics have changed. The purchase is the status quo and National will not dare put re-privatisation before the electorate this year, though that may be what it ultimately does with the trains if not the tracks.

John Roughan is right. I can't remember anti-smacking, Kiwisaver, or re-nationalising the railway being on Labour's agenda last election.

So all the unreasonable demands for National to reveal what they'll do in government should be meet with the question 'what the hell will Labour do?'.

We're beginning to understand why Barack Obama keeps protesting so vigorously against the prospect of "George Bush's third term." Maybe he's worried that someone will notice that he's the candidate who's running for it.

The Bush policies I want Obama to adopt are free trade and a commitment to Iraq. Fingers crossed.

Put this or other choices on tax or climate change or social justice or social responsibility to a member of Team Cameron and they soon reply "Ah but he is a pragmatist".

He sounds like a person who has been on a long political journey to get to where he is; the leader of the Conservatives. Some interesting parallels with John Key.

John Key and David Cameron represent modern conservatives, the future for their political philosophy and consequently our future. They're socially liberal and concerned with social justice, but see them as secondary to providing effective, efficient government that doesn't squash personal responsibility and individual freedoms.

US conservatives (the Republicans) aren't quite their yet. Which is why loosing to Obama could be the best thing for them.

"Can I assure her that neither I, nor my family trust, was an owner of shares in Tranz Rail at that time, and she has misled the House."

Miss Clark made no comment, taking the back route out of Parliament. Through a spokesman she says she accepts Mr Key's word. He now wants her to say sorry.

"Sorry would be nice, but I won't hold my breath," says Mr Key.

Heh - Labour's most aggressive line of attack for a while, delivered by the PM herself (instead of Cosgrove, or Cullen, or Goff) turns out to be complete rubbish. I'm pleased channel three reported this because channel one certainly didn't and after such an intense battle in parliament one was left wondering.

The thing is even if the PM's allegations were true, a man like Mr Key would have shares all over the place so it's hardly a demonstrated conflict of interest. A real scandal would be if Mr Key had invested all his shares in one basket....and then said something so their value increased - which didn't happen of course (much to the PM's disappointment).

This is the first time the PM has fronted the attack, so it'll be interesting to see how the public reacts. To me it looks like she's clutching at screws big time!

1. The PM couldn't answer any questions on the cost of the KiwiRail but instead smeared John Key with an allegation that he personally benefited from the sale of the rail in 1993 (at least that's what I think she was alleging).

2. Rodney Hide rode to his rescue - way to go Rodney, he really got to the guts of the matter.

2. Key didn't respond to the allegation initially (why..?) but later tabled a press release revealing the PM is talking rubbish.

The pitfalls of political economics were evident in the Prime Minister's remarks yesterday. "One locomotive can pull the equivalent freight of 65 trucks," declared Helen Clark. But one locomotive cannot take that freight to 65 different destinations. The train will need trucks to deliver much of its cargo at one end of the journey or the other, often both. Multiple handling probably costs more than single long haul saves. Witness Toll's wish to keep the railway's profitable truck depots.

^I was going to blog on this very point today's Editorial made. The more I think about it the more I question the viability of profitable rail in NZed. In Aussie when transporting goods over a long distance e.g. Perth of Sydney it makes a lot of sense to use rail. But in NZed, a country bisected by the Cook Strait, it makes more sense to use trucks. On a 'long haul' from Auckland to Wellington a truck can deliver to various out of the way locations on the way.

However, I still hope they're able to make KiwiRail successfull.

Short of going back to carrier pigeon or stone tablets, there is little the party can do - email is an essential modern tool for political organisations".

Activist Nicky Hager's The Hollow Men, which detailed the inside workings of the National Party's campaign before the 2005 election using leaked personal e-mails from leader Don Brash's computer and other internal documents, has been turned into a feature-length documentary.

One issue that really gets my blood boiling is Nicky Hager and Dr Brash's stolen emails. When the main opposition party, or any party for that matter, cannot correspond in confidence then that is a huge thread to our democracy. More of a thread than the Electoral Finance Act and Winston Peters combined. Nicky Hager is nothing more than a terrorist.

Strong words for sure, but that's how strong I feel about this issue. The use of stolen emails would be justified in the minds of some if Hager unearth a ghastly secret. But Nicky Hager could not find a smoking-gun even with access to hundreds of Dr Brash's emails. Much of what Hager 'revealed' had already been aired by the media. This shows the media are doing their job and such skullduggery is totally unnecessary.

In the USA the Watergate scandal sparked a massive federal investigation and resulted in the resignation of a President. What happens in New Zealand; the police took a year to tell us they had nothing. The Labour government provides money so the stolen emails can be made into a play and a film. It would be a joke if it weren't true.

The media are reluctant to link Labour with this crime, but I suspect that Helen's much talked about 'neutron bomb' is really just more stolen emails. Even if Labour had no part in stealing the emails, they are a party to the crime by using them for political purposes. It is also well known Helen and Heather stand over the police, so the investigation into the theft would hardly be impartial. Helen has expressed NO abhorrence to what has happened despite the implications for our democracy.

I could still respect Helen if my only disagreement with her was over political philosophy. Hell I could even be converted on a point or two. But Helen's involvement in this is disgusting and reveals her true unprincipled nature. As Dr Brash said this Labour government is indeed the most corrupt in New Zealand's history.

By-election 'sends message to Rudd'

Nationals candidate Darren Chester triumphed with 63 per cent of the two-party preferred vote in yesterday's poll, against Labor candidate Darren McCubbin's 37 per cent.

"I think it's an extraordinary result that you have a 7 per cent swing against Mr Rudd only seven months after he has won the election, which would be one of the largest swings against a newly elected government, I think, since Federation."

Rather surprising. Just the other day I read a headline that the Coalition was preparing for the worst. Whether this reflexes dissatisfaction with the Rudd government or just dissatisfaction with the current economic climate is a subject for debate.

My assessment of the Rudd govt. is a bit of a mixed bag. Their efforts to reduce government spending and inflation is commendable. But their '2020 summit' and EU style Australiasian/South East Asia pact idea is just puffery. Kevin Rudd's leadership style is also a mixed bag. One minute he's dramatic and serious and the next he's acting a bit of a clown.

David Farrar said the Liberal leader Brendon Nelson was unelectable. Granted Brendon does seem an unlikely leader, but that's why I like him. He seems more genuine that Kevin. David has declared his allegiance for Malcolm Turnball, which may colour his comments.

I see it now - the launch of the new train company is going to be a massive public relations effort; photo ops, news paper spreads, the works. It's actually just the positive news that Labour needs. The optimistic vision Labour will seek to convey and the fact they've appointed a former National Party prime minister will go someway to drowning out the criticism Because after all everyone wants rail to be a success. But the criticism is very valid. I would probably only use a train perhaps once a year - if that!.

I don't see how the train company won't just become a black whole for money.

^I agreed. Nandor was/is my favourite green MP. It's easy to disregard him because of his dreadlocks, but he has many positive qualities. He's not from the psychotic far left of the party and advocates negotiating with both sides of the house. He's apparently pretty onto it with IT issues. He also showed good manners in the house - his dislike of shouting matches is something akin to Don Brash.

As a non-dope smoker I respect his principled stand on the issue, and dare I say it, even his right to smoke dope.

As much as I want Labour to be annihilated in the up & coming election, I want them to remain competitive for the following reasons:

1. If a National govt. looks certain, some of their vote may break off to minor parties (as what happened to Labour in 2002).
2. Some of Labour’s collapsed vote may go to Winston Peters - & no body wants that!
3. A close election engerises National & Labour's base, brings out the volunteers, & makes for a fun election e.g. 2005.

In saying that I don’t think National voters are in any mood to risk their vote, regardless what happens to Labour.

So, going by my logic, if I pollster rings & asks who am I voting for, I should say Labour – followed by twenty hail marries & a shower to try and get clean again ;).

Today I transferred my opinion blog to Blogspot from my Windows Live Space to see if I prefer this platform.

I'm also experimenting with a new blog name. I've another blog name in the pipeline if I don't like 'BrashTalk'.

I'll probably duel post on Windows Live Space & Blogspot until I decide which one to keep.

As odd as it seems I actually try & stay loyal to Windows Live products. But eventually even I get frustrated with Microsoft products & find something more user friendly. The thing is Microsoft products have some good features but are let down by not giving their customers flexibility like having multiple Spaces under one passport account.

Other times it can be something small. For example I battled to get the Windows Live Toolbar to work for me i.e. open search results in a new tab & the blogging feature. I emailed Microsoft a couple of times & scoured the web for info., but eventually I gave up & use the Google toolbar. And since I'm using the Google toolbar the natural progression is to use Google products.

Unlike many people I'm not cynical about Microsoft at all. So when they start losing customers like me, then they should really be concerned.

Of course in typical Microsoft fashion they'll probably suddenly improve their products (IE8 beta is just around the corner) & I may regret making the change.

Helen Clark was a touch more conciliatory & actually addressed the questions rather than attacking John Key with condescending rubbish.

Editorial: Neglect may cost Labour:

A broader Green Party would build some conservation projects on private property rights and recognise the power of market forces to ensure resources are used sustainably. A party of that stamp would draw support from across the spectrum and could contemplate dealings with any government.

The Green Party needs to move out of left field and become a central player.

If I were to start my own political party, it would be a right-leaning environmental party. It would encourage ethical buying i.e. the purchase of products which have an ethical objective e.g. carbon neutral, free range eggs, or made in NZed. Either way it gives the individual the power to decide through the market.

It would give incentives for private individuals to restore environments with native flora using sound ecological principles. I.e. Kahikatea corridor to allow for movement of native species. Wetland restoration to purify water etc.

It would rather put a billion dollars towards cleaning up our environment & helping to save the kiwi than give it to Russia through an emissions trading scheme.

It would trust NZers to contribute their own money toward environmental causes therefore would advocate the lowest possible tax.

It would promote and incentivise clean technology which includes nuclear. It would develop a strategy for introduction of hydrogen cars - nuclear energy is the only efficient way to extract hydrogen from water (electrolysis). Damming a river to power our cars would be ridiculous.

Just a few ideas .

Dr Brash is my favourite modern politician, so I was eager to read the Sunday Star Times interview with him, the first since he retired from the National Party leadership.

The interview was a frank & candid reflection on his time in politics. He revealed his ambitious ideas to scrap the minimum wage, scrap the top tax bracket & cut back on NZ super. Now if that wasn't enough to put lefties into a tail spin, I don't know what would!

For the record I actually don't agree with everything he has said, which shows my more moderate standpoint. For example I don't agree with scrapping the minimum wage. The labour market isn't competitive enough for employees to demand high wages. Also young employees often don't know they're being screwed.

Brash also talked about his regret he didn't unilaterally make some policy decisions, which is a little concerning. He reckons that if he ran as a conviction politician he may have done better.

Now I really respect Don & his views, but he sounds frustrated with the process.

If Don was given a free-hand to run the country would things be better? Absolutely. Probably markedly better. But you still have to go through the process, as painful as it is. Of course Brash understands that. The political process both hinders and helps us. It hinders us by making it hard to push through tough decisions like cutting backing NZ super (which is inevitable as the population is aging). But it helps us in the sense that if Keith Lock became leader of the Labour party, most of his communist ideals would have to be left at the door. I'm pretty sure Clark has toned herself down in order to be Labour leader.

Ultimately I think a Prime Minister Brash is a missed opportunity. Even constrained by the moderate Nats, he would've reduced the level of government, and returned more responsibility to individuals. But my main reason for for wanting a PM Brash are his personal attributes.

Former deputy governor Richard Lang on Dr Brash:

His personality was quiet, introverted, retiring. He was very confident in his own understanding, but never pushy. Don was polite an sensitive and did not put people down; at times he was a little too generous. But he had absolute integrity; there was never the slightest doubt that when he said something he meant it. He was never two-faced. He dealt with facts not personalities, really got angry, never sarcastic. If he disagreed with you, he'd sit you down and discuss it in a rational way. In that way he was enjoyable to work with.

I'm all for reducing waste, but I don't subscribe to a Luddite mentality. That is sacrificing a technological convenience can't be the way forward, otherwise we might as well ban the iPod & take up the recorder. If the article above is anything to go by turning off standby devices is nothing more than tokenism. If you were really concerned about saving power you'd shave a minute or so off your shower time.

Whenever I unplug my electric tooth brush charger.. I forget to plug it back in to my great frustration when I next clean my teeth.

I try and make practical contributions; make my lunch, bike to work, & combine multiple car trips.

^My goodness my quick shops have a big shop price! And I only brought a 250gram block of cheese. The high inflation has affected other items too, such as toiletries.

Sure the price hikes aren't the government fault. What is the govt. fault is our ability to coupe with the price raises. After years of some of the best economic conditions since WWII our real world wages have not kept pace - especially compared to Aussie.

Seeing off five National Party leaders sounds impressive, but is it: Bolger defeated Clark in '96. Dr Brash practically tied with her in '05, and Key's about to defeat her in '08. Obviously she had to defeat someone to get into power, which was Shipley. So that only leaves Bill English who she annihilated (unfortunately for English the voters were experimenting with MMP).

Overall Clark's party vote has hung around ~40% at best; hardly an earth shattering mandate.

Personality obsession may end Brown

Whatever your political inclinations, there is an inescapable human tragedy here: an intelligent, if wrong-headed, man who seems to have no idea what is so unattractive about his behaviour, or any inclination to make the concessions which would put it right.

And that is, I admit, quite fascinating. But other politicians have been emotionally tone deaf in this way - Edward Heath comes immediately to mind - without their inadequacy in this area becoming the stuff of public obsession.

It may have been Mr Brown's misfortune to have his particular idiosyncracies exposed in a period when voyeurism and the morbid exposure of personalities to unconscionable strain has become the currency of entertainment.

He has inadvertently facilitated the process by which politics becomes a species of reality television. In the Westminster village, we are all waiting for the next installment.

Will Mr Brown crack at the next PMQs and have to be led out of the chamber? Will we actually get to see him reduced to incoherent rage during his next television interview? Whose kick-and-tell memoirs will be next to reveal the details of his sulks and private outbursts?

On the flip side, this article suggests Gordon Brown would be a more successful PM 20 or 30 years ago. If that's the case is it fair for the media to home in on his personality flaws...? If only our media would home in on Helen Clark's arrogance, nasty put downs & miraculous ability to call others hypocrites & be guilty of doing the exact same thing but to a much greater degree.

But then I think of how Don Brash was mascaraed for his seemingly bumbling & quaint style.

So I can see the argument from both sides of the coin. However, personality flaws are very much a matter of perspective, so to answer my question - no it isn't fair.

...I believe the address they've given isn't that of their party's financial officer therefore the pamphlet is illegal under the terms of the Electoral Finance Act. An Act they voted for.

Okay, besides that hypocritical breach the pamphlet draws attention to topical environmental issues, which is good.

What is not so good is their rationale. On biofuels:

In particular, they must be substantially reduce carbon emissions compared with fossil fuels, they must not be made from food crops or by taking up food producing land, and they must not lead to destruction of biodiversity and ecosystems.

The new leader of the Nats is pushing all the right buttons so far. He’s a smooth operator which is in contrast to Dr Brash.

Although I’ve liked what John has said his speeches are full of feel good phrases and words used to appease the media & people with huge chips on their shoulders but doesn't really mean much. For example talking about ‘inclusiveness’ & ‘tangata whenua’ really means bugger all in the lives of everyday New Zealanders. It’s interesting to see Brash detractors warm to Key when all that’s change is the language rather than the policies – stupid if you ask me.

The British Prime Minister handed in his resignation to the Queen last night @ the same time Emirates Team New Zealand were sailing against Alinghi in the fourth race. I watched both as I wrote my thesis.

The outcomes; Gordon Brown becomes the new Prime Minister & Team NZ lost with the series level @ 2 all.

Tony Blair had been in power for 10.5 years. He may not be very popular in the UK anymore, but I still respect him.

Having just one bottle of beer after each working day costs the planet 120kg in greenhouse emissions each year.
mowing the lawn and odd jobs around the home produce almost 3.75 tonnes of emissions each year
Australian mothers juggling child-rearing responsibilities and housework pumped out more than four tonnes of emissions a year.
Using a leaf blower once a fortnight for 15 minutes to clear up the garden and driveway produces almost 8kg annually.
Mowing with a two-stroke fortnightly for 20 minutes burns 29kg each year and buying a sandwich every day accounts for 120kg, including the production and transportation of ingredients.
Daily computer use produces 240kg of greenhouse emissions each year and watching TV for four hours a week pumps out 46.8kg.
A sedan driven 40km five days a week spews out more than 2.7 tonnes of emissions. Taking the bus would slash that to 888kg.

Basically whatever we do produces carbon. So instead of continually scrutinising auto & air travel perhaps the spot light should be shone on those hippies who buy sushi for lunch .

Although not universally liked I had a lot of respect for Don Brash. In many ways he's the polar opposite of Helen Clark; polite & principled with a good sense of humour. But in the end Dr Brash became victim to Clark's shrewd political spin machine. This is a victory of spin over substance.

John Key is the likely successor. He has the makings to be popular, but I'm not sure of him yet. He trumped Cullen in the finance debates last election. So either way Clark's toast!

Yesterday North Korea tested a nuclear weapon under ground to the out cry of many countries around the world. Many people are contrasting Iraq's lack of WMDs with North Koreas apparent nuclear test. However the big difference is korea's next door neighbour China. North Korea is pretty much under the Chinese thumb with China providing a life line to the country. And in return China uses North Korea as a lighting rod to defect attention from it's own problems. But the erratic Kim Jong-il must be worrying for even China.

Civil servants galore………

Over 10,000 more civil servants have been employed by the govt over the last seven years. This means:

More desk space occupying over 40% of Wellington's CBD.
Office area increases from 226,124m2 to 371,547m2
Translates to 37 rugby fields - with 15 added on in the last 7 years.
34,000 more people employed in the state sector.
Total of 280,000 people employed by the state.

Yet no increase in serves!

"Little to indicate New Zealanders are getting more services and better results for the large increase in resources....What little information exists is not encouraging" Treasury Report, 2006.

So there we have it. There are more civil servants to moderate our lives and to collect taxes for the govt coffers. And more state sector employees to pay union fees which ultimately fund Labour's election campaign. Tidy little arrangement.

Things aren’t always what they seem

Just because the economy is doing well doesn’t necessarily mean the country is doing well. This was highlighted by outgoing Fletcher Building chief executive Ralph Waters.

Politicians tend to spin economic data to their own means, so it’s hard to get the full picture. But when a high power executive uses his farewell lunch to warn about the economy with no apparently gain to him, I took note:

The record $14.54 billion current account deficit should have shocked people out of their complacency, but that had not happened. "Strong economic activity that is consumption-driven is also a bit misleading as to how we are really traveling. The current account deficit is a reminder but, in the main, the country seems oblivious to the large structural imbalances," he said.

"Yet as a country we do all we can to discourage major manufacturing investment here, with the lack of certainty of power, its uncompetitive pricing relative to external options and the success vested interests have in making meaningful new investments very difficult, if not near impossible.

"These are false luxuries that the country cannot afford."

Makes ominous reading. I think the lack of certainty of power is a critical issue. How many more rivers are going to be damned & how much more coal is going to be burnt – both environmentally unfriendly, before NZ bites the bullet & goes nuclear? I’m not necessarily pro nuclear, but what I object to is putting the NZ future at risk for the sake of anti-nuclear political rhetoric.

She was asked if there was anything the Government wanted to do that it hasn’t done yet. She said: “It has taken time to work up the kitty for Working for Families. It has taken time to work up the kitty for interest-free loans and early childhood programme. So undoubtedly there will be areas we will build on for next time which will be new.”

So there it is – the economy is for Labour the way they build up the kitty for sweeteners, for giveaways in election years, using your money to buy your votes. Your money – they’ll be spending it."

I'd sacrifice my interest free student loan & Kiwi Saver (not that I've signed up yet) if gave me the freedom to keep more of my pay & spend it how I like.

Reaffirming my view

This article in the Telegraph reaffirms to me why capitalism is good.

Why does the system work? Because it provides incentives and motivation. If you invent something, you may get fame and fortune. If you supply food or cars cheaper, you get more customers. Simple enough."

Thanks to Capitalism I drive a refined European car instead of a crap Lada. Sure capitalism has its faults, but I'm not going to jump on the anti-capitalism bandwagon just because it's fashionable.

Commonwealth Games & Blair

The Melbourne Commonwealth Games came to an end this week. New Zealand came 9th on the metal table with 31 metals (6 gold, 12 silver & 13 bronze). Apparently it was predicted we'd get a total of 46 metals, so probably not the best result. We were beaten by Scotland (6th) & Jamaica.... man.

The next games are in Delhi India 2010.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair was in the country this week, his first visit. Despite Blair's popularity waning in the UK, I still agree with a lot he has to say on international relations specifically American isolationism. I find the way Blair speaks in total contrast to our own crass PM. At least Blair has the courage to stand by his convictions unlike our own poll driven Prime Minister.

Owera and the Danes

Brash delivered his Owera III speech on the 1^st. Before reading the speech myself, I read what Brash’s opponents thought of it. I don’t know what speech they heard but it didn’t sound anything like what I read.

I’ve also been following the news story about Muslim outrage over a cartoon of the prophet Muhammad printed in an independent Danish newspaper. Apparently it’s against Islamic law to draw Muhammad so the poor Danes have faced boycotts against Danish products, protests, embassy closures in Denmark, withdraw of ambassadors, and even threats against Danes abroad. If Muslims are offended by a silly satirical cartoon, just wait till a ‘South Park’ episode comes out.

I understand that Muslims are offended, but aren’t they taking it a bit too far? Printing a satirical cartoon is one thing, but burning the Danish flag in the middle of a street is on a whole new level. There comes a point where the reaction out weighs the original offence.

I just read in the NZ herald that Don Brash plans to stay on as leader of the National Party. Although Don is getting on a bit, I think he's a real decent guy with a sense of humour & manners, qualities that are lacking in the current PM. So I'm quite pleased with the news.
